Gold E. Locks on Trial

Saltillo Elementary fourth grade Discovery students have a better understanding of how a courtroom works after taking part in a mock trial at the Lee County Justice Center.
Held before Lee County (a.k.a. Bear County) Court Judge Stephen Spencer and his courtroom staff, student jurors heard the case of "Gold E. Locks and the Three Bears." Prosecution and defense lawyers presented witnesses and evidence -- Gold E. Locks, Mom A. Bear, Pop A. Bear, Babe E. Bear, bowls of porridge, a broken chair, and more!
After deliberations, jury members (split into two groups) found the accused guilty on some counts and not guilty on others. Gold E. Locks was sentenced to one year in jail, with nine months suspended. An appeal is planned.
During this field trip, Judge Spencer and other court officials explained the workings of the courtroom and answered questions from students. Thanks to all who made time for this mock trial. It was a fun way for students to learn about this important part of the justice system!
