three students presenting their bridge in front of an audience

Members of Guntown Middle School's Bridge Building class recently had the honor of taking part in a national competition.

GMS student teams built balsa wood bridges and submitted portfolios to enter the competition. One of the three teams, Bridgecore, was selected to come to the AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) National Bridge Competition in Madison, Wisconsin.

In front of more than 200 students and judges, the Guntown team first presented a PowerPoint of the journey of building the bridge. Next, the model was loaded on the bridge tester that applied a load to the bridge's deck.

Guntown 8th graders Holly Beall, Liz Buse, and Zach McNinch placed fourth out of six teams invited to the 7th/8th grade national competition. Congratulations!
