Taste Test at Shannon

Shannon High/Middle School students had the opportunity to vote on a favorite food item that could soon be offered in school cafeterias around the state.

Larry Hill, MDE Office of Child Nutrition Food and Product Specialist, made the trip from Jackson to Shannon Tuesday to allow students to test a new ranch dressing mix. During their lunch break, students were given samples of the ranch to try with saltine crackers, carrots, or cucumber slices. They then rated the taste and look of the dressing.

LCSD Child Nutrition Director Valerie Weivoda said, "MDE Office of Child Nutrition procures kitchen food for the majority of Mississippi school districts with a state contract. A food item must pass several student tests before it is approved on state contract."

Shannon High/Middle is the first student test MDE has conducted for the ranch dressing mix.
